Mathematician uses game theory to win at poker

KU professors win 66000 grant for Pacific Islands study

Five Kansas University professors receive a 66000 two year grant from the Sumitomo Fund for Policy Research and the Rockefeller Foundation to study Micronesia and Papua New Guinea. Research covers economics politics culture change defense and Japanese attitudes with initial travel possible in December.

Stolen Police Car Crash Kills Three Generations

In Lawton Oklahoma a teenager stole a police cruiser with siren and lights on. after 377 feet the car crossed the median and hit an oncoming vehicle. A baby girl, her grandmother and great grandmother died. two other children were critically injured along with the cruiser driver Ricky Glenn Overstreet, 18, listed in very critical condition.

City builds full staff with new inspectors

The Lawrence Community Development Department hires a building inspector and rehabilitation specialist to fill vacancies. Sandra Francisco becomes a minimum housing inspector with Coffeyville’s department and starts at the end of May. Gene Shaughnessy will fill the housing specialist post, vacated in March by Robert Still.

South Ridge Plaza project eyes 30 to 60 day start

Developers of the South Ridge Plaza at 23rd and Ousdahl plan to begin construction in 30 to 60 days after delays cited by Reg Armstrong of Varnum Armstrong Deeter Overland Park. The site had a prior redevelopment attempt by a St Joseph firm. The 18th Amendment, enacted January 29, 1919, prohibited alcohol production and sale in the United States.

Driver injured in rollover near U.S. 40 north of Lawrence

Joel Robinson of 2200 Harper was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for rib injuries after his car overturned in a ditch on a county road near U.S. 40. Troopers said the northbound vehicle ran a stop sign and damaged a fence. Jarvis Brink of Rt. 1 argued briefly with Robinson before leaving as troopers arrived. A passenger was unhurt. No damage estimate was available.

Rehiring of Smith Under Advisement

Lawrence city commissioners declined to rehire Dennis Smith of the sanitation workers union, taking the request under advisement after a lengthy meeting. Smith, fired in April over alleged back problems, argues his dismissal violated his First Amendment rights amid union activity.

Progress on city employee grievances and 27 point plan

The city reports progress on the 27 point grievance resolution with 13 points in effect and ongoing developments. KU submits 1977 budget for Lawrence campus to regents

Kansas University officials filed the FY 1977 operating budget request for the Lawrence campus with the Kansas Board of Regents three days after the May 1 deadline. KU Medical Center budget work continued under Keith Nitcher with a goal of delivery to the regents by late today or Thursday.
