A two day Kansas Editorial Association convocation opened at the University with 125 editors registered. The event included talks by Paul C. Rankin, H. W. Albright, G. L. Caswell and William Allen White. An afternoon ride and a banquet at Haskell Institute conclude the day.
Allen White spoke informally to journalism classes after convocation and invited questions about Arthur Brisbane. A student asked for Brisbane’s opinion, and White answered that Brisbane has talent but works for Hearst and that he would pay ten dollars a week to have him write exclusively for the Emperor Gazette.
In Canton, Ohio, three posse members died and two wounded after a gun battle with four gunmen fleeing with a kidnapped motorist police say was aiding a gang member sought in multiple bank robberies. The confrontation ended with gunmen mortally wounded and officers closing in near the woods.
Fred B Cooper of Topeka beat W H King of Iola 6 5 in the Kansas Editorial Golf Tournament semi finals. Will Townsley of Great Bend defeated C A Scott of Iola 3 2. Myr Cooper meets Townsley in the final this afternoon. Bert Harris of the Herington Times won 2 1 over Emmett George of Topeka in the second flight. Roy Bailey of the Salina Journal elected secretary of the Editorial Golf Association.
The American flag pins used to fasten badges at the visiting editor today lent patriotic tech to the occasion. They were a gift from T. J. Sweeney, a member of the reception committee and chairman of the entertainment committee of the Chamber of Commerce of Lawrence.
Increasing cloudiness tonight then unsettled Saturday. Warmer conditions expected tonight in the southeast portion and cooler readings Saturday in the west and north. Temperatures compared with yesterday show a slight rise in some areas.
Workers suspend operations to clear the stage for Kansas editors visiting Lawrence. The Community House drive will resume early next week as donors are tallied and a complete list published. Irregular forces destroyed the Castle Pollard barracks in West Meath after raiding Mullingar. Provisional government troops pursued them. the Mullingar barracks were also blown up to block occupation. Two raiders from the Bancrana bank raid in Donegal were killed, and a nine year old girl who was wounded died from her injuries.
The Sour Owl humorous publication released its final issue of the year. It features many cartoons of a flapper girl and jokes aimed at students. The cover teases the renowned galoshes and contains playful material typical of campus humor.

Washington May 5 Lt Col Duncan Major was expected to appear late today before the senate military committee to answer charges filed with the committee.
Robert F. Roberts faced a district court jury after wives No 1 and No 2 testified he had married both women. Evidence showed Roberts rode a path from Topeka to Lawrence and then Kansas City for ceremonies with Belle Lambert while Carry Roberts remained his lawful spouse. A Dallas County insanity adjudication in 1918 was entered as a defense, and legal wife Carry testified he had shown signs of instability. Roberts was arrested last winter in Edgerton when wife No 2’s family learned of wife No 1.
General Wu Pei Fu controlled Peking at noon while General Chang Tso Lin fled toward Mukden after a day and a half of heavy bombardment. Wu surrounded Chang with 50 000 troops and rumors say Chang’s forces are in disorder near Tsin.
Los Angeles May 5 Mary Pickford has been chosen president of a club of motion picture actresses to promote the good names of its members. Miss Helen Ferguson organizer said admission would be by investigation only and none admitted unless a credit to the industry.
Lawton Oklahoma May 5 arson information filed in justice court against Rev T H Inwin who has resigned as pastor of the Presbyterian church and H R The charges follow county attorney investigation of fires started in the church. Tourists are described as on their way with spring travel increasing through Lawrence with cars loaded with equipment as they pass through.
Jack Dempsey told the Associated Press that a rematch with Georges Carpentier is almost certain this year in London or Paris if Carpentier defeats Ted Lewis in London on May 11.
Application by EB M Perkins E Otis Perkins and F H Perkins to move the trial on fraud charges to another county was denied by Judge Hugh Means. Defendants argued they could not receive a fair trial in Douglas County. the judge ruled venue must stay within his district. The case involves a Chicago man who claims a $2000 defrauding incident and creditors note Rollin Perkins’ prior stake in Perkins & Co.
Bud Balew, once a deputy sheriff ousted for lax enforcement, was killed in Wichita Falls Texas today by five shots with the fatal bullet piercing the head. W McCormick surrendered to Captain Hickman in Ardmore Oklahoma on May 5.
St Louis May 5 John G Higdon a local lawyer announced he would not enter the Democratic race for U S senator against Reed and Breckenridge Long former third assistant secretary of state in the Wilson administration said he had written to Wilson about the decision Wilson replied not to complicate the Missouri contest by entering the race
Former Senator Albert Beveridge defeated Senator Harry New by 24 472 votes in the Republican U S senate nomination race. Official AP tally lists Beveridge 205 410 and New 184 938 from 92 counties. A separate item notes juror Charles Melville being charged for discussing the Small case.
Local real estate owners allege the new county assessments are unreasonably high with many values more than doubling compared with recent sales. Complaints pour in to the county treasurer clerk and commissioners as the board of equalization prepares for hearings.
Reports of a sore eye epidemic at the university prompted water tests and a hospital label of pickeye. The department of physical education denied the pool as the cause and said the outbreak is not serious. Dr. Smith at the university hospital questioned the pool link.
In district court J B Martin sues Fred Ott for return of 3,500 paid for property and 8,500 in notes cancellation. Martin alleges fraud claiming the tract was 63 acres but was smaller. Ott answers that he sold by tract not by acre and riverfront changes reduced acreage unknown.
The Austin tornado death toll climbed to twelve as Andrew McGrory a Port Arthur student at St Edwards College was found dead in brush west of campus. Earlier a nine year old girl was found in another area, as winds hurled victims across the city.
The Dominion Exposition shows in Lawrence stage one more animal than at arrival. A monkey was born there, possibly the first in Lawrence in years. Patronage improves this week after rain, and the American Legion may gain a substantial addition to its building fund through aid.
In a criminal cases term a juror walked out of the courtroom declaring he had reached a decision. The court bailiff confronted him asking where he was going and whether the jury had reached a decision. The juror replied he was going home having reached his decision.
William Allen White told University of Kansas students to adopt a keen moral intelligence and question the status quo. He urged laughter at sacred beliefs, warned against fear of youth, and said reform comes from youth who view life differently. Chancellor Lindley introduced him to the audience.
Grade school relays featuring city school members are set for tomorrow morning at the Stadium starting at 10 o'clock. Waller Varnum will present a silver cup to the winning team and each member of the top three teams receives a ribbon. The boys will remain for the Jayhawker Cornhusker meet on Dr. Forrest Atlon's invitation.
B Hosford chosen Wednesday evening as a member of the county board filed bond and will be sworn in tonight or tomorrow. Commissioners adjourned today to meet tomorrow after sessions spent approving bills. Mothers conference at city clinic drew thirty infants with one from out of town and two new attendees yesterday. W. D. Green died at Memorial hospital after two weeks unconsciousness from injuries in a Pennsylvania Street dispute over a rooster. John Johnson was arrested on assault and battery charges. a coroner's inquest will determine if the death changes the case to murder. Eddie Green fired a shotgun during the altercation.
More than fifty Wansas editors attended the Sigma Delta Chi event at the Sigma Nu house on Wind Hill. Ray Bailey recalled early newspaper days while Howard Haines and the Hamilton brothers staged readings and piano tricks as a four piece orchestra provided music. The upstairs event honored journalists and featured reminiscences and performances. Richard Croker was buried in Glencairn castle grounds after his death last Saturday. The No 6 school program will conclude the year with a 8 o clock show tonight. O J Lane and wife invited guests.
