Does qualifying matter in Winston Cup racing today
In 954 Winston Cup races at 21 tracks only seven winners started 35th or worse, with four of those in the last 27 races. Durability, track position, and drafting have lessened the penalty for bad qualifying. Yet top five starts still yield the most wins, while even a poor start won’t ruin a team's weekend as long as the car is solid and can move up.
