President Clinton defends U S foreign policy and says the country will not hesitate to act. He rejects claims of indecision, defending his approach to Bosnia and other global issues. See story on page 3A.
Senate Republicans and House Democrats reached a compromise on the omnibus appropriations bill after four days of late hours and stalled talks. The bill, including a state employee pay raise and extra education funding, passed 84-39 and was sent to Gov. Joan Finney as adjournment finally arrived after extended wrapup session hours.
KU staff and faculty will see raises and a $3.8 million allocation to rebuild Hoch Auditorium after the Legislature approved the state budget. Classified workers gain 1.5 percent cost-of-living increase effective Oct 1, with unclassified faculty rising about 6 percent on July 1. Faculty averages: $51,600. classified average $22,250. Budig hails the budget as KU’s best in five years amid faculty and staff cheer.
Three Lawrence High School seniors face five day suspensions and police inquiry after a costly prank at Mayflower Contract Services. Oil drained from 41 buses, contaminated soil removed, and parking lot restored at expense of about 20000 dollars. An additional late-night spray art and a Molotov incident also occurred with unidentified teens.
Prime Minister Rabin and Yasser Arafat signed a landmark accord promising Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and Jericho and initiating Palestinian self rule. Arafat briefly walked out over disputed maps before signing after a letter was offered. The ceremony drew international attention as Mubarak and Christopher mediated a last minute dispute.
