Los Angeles curfew lifted as city seeks normal workday

LA residents returned to routine after a dusk to dawn curfew was lifted amid reports of a calmer city. National Guardsmen shot and killed a motorist who tried to run them down, raising the death toll to 47. President Bush held talks with cabinet officials on rebuilding LA and other cities, while downtown areas began to reopen and commuters filled the freeways.

Art in the Park draws crowds to South Park show

Lawrence artists and hundreds of works filled South Park for the annual Art in the Park event drawing about 10 000 attendees. Doner Hedrick demonstrated pastels beneath a leafless tree while Mike Rieghm showcased wooden toys for children and juried winners were announced by the Lawrence Art Guild and Parks Department.

KU hails full waiver of tuition for GTAs

Sen. Wint Winter Jr. of Lawrence announced Kansas University graduate teaching assistants will receive a 100 percent tuition waiver this fall, up from 75 percent, after a legislative session deal. The waiver, now in the omnibus appropriations bill, will save resident GTAs about $917 in tuition this semester.

Local drivers face higher pump costs as gas prices climb about four cents a gallon with a July 1 tax rise to 18 cents per gallon. KU Committee Repeats Free Speech Plan on Campus

The Kansas University Human Relations Committee proposes a campus free speech statement to affirm expression while condemning hate speech. Drafted for KU Senate Executive Committee, it appeared in the HRC’s final 1901-92 report to Senix last Friday, with no action taken. The panel may seek endorsement at the next Senix meeting in early June.
