US Marines pressed up Hill 881 North near the Laotian border then stalled for the night. Casualties in the 11 day drive reached about 900 with 157 killed while enemy deaths were reported at 506 confirmed.
Missouri clears toll road authorization through the House and sends it toward Gov. Warren Hearnes for final action. The 104-54 vote backed a second House Senate conference report amid debate over restrictive amendments. Routes discussed include Kansas City to the Arkansas line, southeast to the Bootheel, and northeast toward Chicago.
Kit Gunn editor in chief of Lawrence High School The Budget is one of 19 Kansas journalists honored as most valuable staffers in Wichita. He ranks 26th academically in a class of over 450 and is a National Merit Scholar semifinalist and Kansas University scholarship finalist. Gunn attends KU camps and holds multiple honors and a 1967 summer Research Apprentice scholarship.
London AP reports the Bank of England kept its interest rate at 5 percent to align with global declines. It marks the third cut this year after January’s 7 to 6 percent and March’s 6 percent reductions. The move follows the budget’s austerity stance and April gold reserve gains suggesting pound strength.

The Senate Armed Services Committee recommended a four year extension of the draft law with a lottery style selection. Induction would start at age 19 with local boards overseeing registration and classification. Student deferments would continue until degree completion or age 24. The panel questioned equity of random selection.
West Junior High announces an outdoor band concert at 6 30 p m Monday May 8 in the north parking lot. Seventh Grade Band will director Wyatt Cooper and perform pieces including Pied Piper Overture and Battle Hymn of the Republic. The B Band follows with selections such as Build er of Champions and Hava Nagila. The A Band closes with music from The Music Man and Rhap sodie Modernata among others.
Forty two Haskell Institute students will be honored for scholastic achievement at the Annual Honor Roll Appreciation Night. The event will begin at 6 tonight in Stidham Union, honoring those with a B plus average across business home economics printing and vocational departments for the first three quarters.
Patricia Mills reported her watch worth 55 dollars stolen from her room at 1339 W Campus Rd. Jim Calvert of Calvert's Deep Rock service station at 920 N 2nd St reported 50 dollars stolen from the station’s cash register while he serviced a car.

Two persons were injured in a two car accident this afternoon at 11th and Tennessee Streets. Maurice M. Casey 63 Stillwell and Harold D. May Jr. 18 Kansas City Kan collided at 12 21 p m May and passenger Steve E. Rasmus n 19 1645 Tenn were injured but not taken to hospital.
Rep. Morris Kay, state representative of the 40th district, spoke at the Teen-Age Republicans gathering in the police and fire auditorium. He reviewed the past legislative session and outlined expectations for Republicans entering the next session.
April building permits totaled $808,400, keeping the year’s total at $2,525,950. Continental Construction Co led with $140,000 and Christopher Investment with $248,000. Home construction saw 46 new single family permits worth $265,100, while additions and remodeling reached $103,000. Duplexes, garages, and miscellaneous permits added smaller sums.
Kansas attorney general Robert Londerholm told the Lawrence Kiwanis on Law Day that the rule of law must prevail despite cross currents and passions. He urged upholding no one above or below the law and defended protecting rights of small publications alongside big ones.

Federal milk marketing orders are amended effective May 1 to remove seasonal pricing, keep fluid milk prices aligned with higher seasonal Class I levels, and promote equitable price relationships across orders. The changes, approved after nationwide hearings, phase out seasonal schedules in 39 markets and raise Class I differentials by 20 cents per hundredweight on annual average through April 1968.
