Berlin May 4 A UP diplomat with knowledge of the German scene told readers that Polish Foreign Minister Joseph Beck’s speech could decide if war fears return or if Hitler would act against Danzig and Pomorze. Moderate views from Beck would banish the threat.
Topeka May 4 delayed showers were forecast for southeast and extreme eastern Kansas tonight or tomorrow amid widespread cloudiness. Soil dries under sun and mild temperatures, and moisture is needed. Temperatures stay above normal for 36 hours with a high around 85 tomorrow. No measurable rain in Kansas in 24 hours, with scattered showers in neighboring states.
Washington May 4 A senate subcommittee approved a 378 million dollar increase in farm appropriations, added to 835 million dollars voted by the house. The panel backed 225 million for parity payments 113 million for surplus removal 25 million for tenancy act and 15 million for other ag department activities.
London May 4 Prime Minister Chamberlain urged the Commons to pass the military training bill, estimating conscription could yield about 800000 men over three years. Labour opposes conscription while Britain eyes Poland and Soviet Russia amid Danzig tensions and Litvinov's resignation.
Berlin May 4 British subjects including the Berlin correspondent of the London Daily Telegraph were ordered expelled from Germany by May 24 in what British sources called a reprisal for Britain's ousting of 50 Nazis. Hugh Carleton Greene and five businessmen were among those forced to depart.

Wyman was assistant United States district attorney from 1928 to 1934.
Lee R. Springer, who fled from a sheriff in 1936 during a train ride near the state penitentiary, has been captured in El Paso Texas. Governor Ratner requests his return. Springer was being taken to Lansing by Sheriff Will Zurbucken when he jumped from a wash room window as the train approached the prison at speed.
New York May 4 The nation faces its greatest coal industry stoppage since 1922 as John L. Lewis announces a midnight Friday shutdown, with 126000 additional miners idle on top of 338000 already out since April 1. Eight states in Appalachia could see extended halts unless a last minute peace is reached.
Dr F C Allen will be guest speaker at the annual Bartlesville high school B club banquet on May 9. The B club includes students who earned letters in athletics. Classified ads can be placed by calling 22 for the Ad-Taker.

In Hays Kansas a rooming house owner reports a man matching Edward L. Schneider's description stayed briefly and left without paying. Federal investigators note a Denver hotel guest resemblance and a grand jury subpoenas four Schneider associates, signaling possible probe into his disappearance.
A day after IRA members were sentenced for an attempt on Hammersmith bridge, a wave of bombings struck London Liverpool Birmingham Coventry and a North London district. George Hedrick secretary of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce attended a Topeka session called by the state Chamber to organize industrial and highway groups in Kansas second district. The committee includes Hedrick F C G Huller of Emporia and Mark Drehmer of Topeka with a district meeting set for May 23 in Topeka.
Kansas City May 4 Mayor Bryce B Smith cuts cost through an economy drive costing 222 Public Works employees. Payroll lists 857 workers and 180 were cut from street cleaning. Mayor agrees to audit city finances. Citizens audit committee to appoint firm to start this month.
Sweet potato growers from the Kaw Valley gathered at the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to form a local association. Charles Speaker was named temporary chairman and Ohmar Brunning temporary secretary. George K. Kincade spoke on joining the Kansas State Horticulture Association, noting its long history and 300 plus members. A committee including Charles Speaker Arthur Travis and Herman Theden was elected to draft a constitution for the upcoming annual potato show in Lawrence.
A ticket selling campaign will run in downtown Lawrence for a barbecue Monday night at Haskell Institute. Visiting members of the 61st Coast Artillery and other army men will be guests, with tickets priced at 1 dollar. The event is sponsored by the University ROTC and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. Charles Radcliffe and H W Keene lead the sale efforts.
The Merchants Bureau of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting Tuesday at 6 PM at Wiedemann's. Officers for the coming year will be elected and a program of activities discussed. All Lawrence retail firms in the Chamber are urged to attend. Charles Radcliffe is retiring as chairman and H. W. Keene as retiring vice chairman.

Kansas forecast shows considerable cloudiness with occasional light showers in the southeast and extreme east tonight or Friday. Warmer in extreme northwest tonight. Temperatures from the Gas Office record show a -2 reading at LT 7 pm yesterday and 7 am today with a 28 at noon today as the day’s high.
