Washington May 4 AP The airmail, untouched by private hands for nearly three months, will go out in nine commercial companies over routes totaling 16 797 miles within 30 days. Nine firms hold the first contracts under the post office department move to return airmail to private operators. Fifteen temporary contracts, each for nine days, were awarded. Five former holders retain lines, four are new. Postal officials issued bids on 10 new routes to open May 25 and on two routes with rejected proposals. Analysis shows five of about a dozen former carriers gained 41 of the awards, with newcomers taking one route each.
