Jimmy C James 76 of Lawrence died Tuesday May 2 2017. Services are pending and will be announced by Warren McElwain Mortuary with more details on warrenmcelwain.com.
Coy DALLAS RANDEL, age unknown, passed away on April 29, 2017. A celebration of life is planned for May 12 at 5 pm at D-Dubs in Eudora. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coy Randel Memorial Fund at Kaw Valley Bank.
McLinn, who killed Sasko in his Lawrence home on January 17, 2014, argues to Kansas Supreme Court that trial jury instructions were incomplete. She contends jurors should have received a lesser charge option, second-degree murder, due to dissociative identity disorder and lack of premeditation. Prosecutors counter that evidence supported first-degree murder and premeditation, and the sentence amid claims of cruelty remains warranted. Public safety reporter Conrad Swanson notes McLinn is imprisoned at Topeka Correctional Facility.
After a decade in the works, the city will gain flexibility by ending provisions requiring a short notice lease back to the railway and a potential future repurchase of the depot. Depot Redux began the effort in 2008 to restore the 1950s station at Seventh and New Jersey, backed by a $1.2 million state grant won in 2013 and about $160,000 city funds. Representatives say the agreement shifts control to the city for future use of the land and building.
City commissioners praise the years long effort on the Santa Fe Station agreement allowing Amtrak use during two daily arrivals while the building may host day uses. The deal includes a long term land lease at nominal cost and avoids restrictive lease back terms. Restoration is slated for fall and the panel also reviewed incentives, bonds, and a Plastikon Health care expansion waivers.
