Budget prison expansion and aviation funds approved in budget bill

Legislative negotiators finalized a $12.6 billion budget for the new fiscal year, preserving a $39.5 million prison expansion project and adding $4.75 million for the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University. Legislative budget negotiators push for broader involvement in the Statehouse renovation. The project, now in year seven of 11, has faced cost criticism after a 2000 projection of 120 million rising to 172 million for three of four phases. The House added oversight by the University Research Development and Enhancement Corp., while senators kept existing commissions and leader oversight.
