Navajo Nation President vetoes same sex marriage ban

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr vetoed a measure that would have banned same sex marriage on the reservation. The Tribal Council had unanimously passed a bill restricting unions to a man and a woman and prohibiting plural or closely related marriages. Shirley cited nondiscrimination and concerns about domestic violence and gangs, and said supporters may seek a tribal initiative instead.
