Pediatricians fear misbehavior is labeled as illness as the American Academy of Pediatrics issues first ADHD diagnostic guidelines. The rules require symptoms in two settings and impairment lasting six months for ages 6 to 12, seeking to curb overmedication while ensuring genuinely affected children receive help.
About four to twelve percent of school aged children, up to 3.8 million, are believed to have ADHD. Most are boys. Symptoms include short attention span, impulsive behavior, and difficulty focusing and sitting still.
Research notes involve preschool age group and the academy says some symptoms may be chalked up to normal rambunctiousness and contrari ness in preschoolers.
Gore and Bush face similar plans to preserve tax cuts and spending boosts while protecting Social Security surpluses. Both omit painful steps, blame the other, and warn that a downturn could flip surpluses to deficits as forecasts update this summer.
