Record Crime Stoppers reward hits Douglas County peak
A secret tipster in a June 1997 murder case will receive the largest Crime Stoppers reward in Douglas County history. The anonymous caller aided the arrest of two men linked to Robert Baldwin's death. Dean N. Hale faces first degree murder charges and Hertushka Wells is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and aiding a felon. Tom Moore notes the board approved a $1,000 payout, doubling the prior $500 record.

Lawrence writers win state honors in Kansas Voices
Lawrence author Leslie Reynard won first in adult prose for The Stone Egg, while Lawrence High School sophomore Evan Grosshans won youth poetry for Rapid Eye Mortuary. Over 300 authors submitted around 800 stories and poems for the ninth annual Kansas Voices contest by the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council. Winning works will be read at a May 2 awards presentation in Winfield during Kanza Days.

Lawrence man tied to spree robs three sites in recent spate
William D. Norris, 45, held after alleged Bismarck Inn robbery in Lawrence and linked to an April Hampton Inn theft and a Kwik Shop attempt. Norris, with prior 1991 prison terms for forgery and robbery, fled police after a chase, injuring a leg. He faces multiple charges including robbery, theft, drug offenses, fleeing and eluding, and parole violation.

Probation Added for Witness Intimidation in Manslaughter Case
Lawrence man Julius Miller Jr, age 20, was sentenced Friday to two years probation to run concurrently with three years already served for attempted voluntary manslaughter. He pled guilty to attempted aggravated intimidation of a witness, after two girls in the car testified Miller threatened to kill them if they spoke. If probation terms are violated, up to 40 months could be imposed.
