Great Bend Faces Major Flood After Arkansas River Rise
Flood waters from the Arkansas River receded slightly in Great Bend Kansas as Wichita eyed its worst flood since 1927. About 600 homes and many businesses were flooded or surrounded, 160 evacuees sheltered at the courthouse, 200 fed at breakfast by Red Cross, and 103 more housed by relatives. Damage to Great Bend was estimated at 250 thousand dollars with total loss around one million including crops and roads. Train service remained halted and the city auditorium stood on a water surrounded island as scores of sandbags protected buildings.

Army Pilot Killed in Wichita Plane Crash
Second Lieutenant Finley K. Steele, 25, from San Angelo Texas, died when a twin motor trainer aircraft crashed in the back yard of a Wichita home.
