Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’s veto of restrictions on abortion providers withstood an override attempt in the Kansas Senate. The 25–14 vote fell two votes short of a two-thirds majority needed, keeping the veto in place as debate remained brief. The measure would have required patients to receive ultrasound and fetal heartbeat information 30 minutes before an abortion and allowed suits by patients, families, or prosecutors if a late-term termination was improper. Sebelius opposed provisions letting family members sue and her stance cited potential loss of life-saving care.
