Wyandotte tribe to remove slots from downtown KCK building

The Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma will remove 200 slot machines from the former Masonic lodge in downtown Kansas City Kansas. The tribe has faced state battles over gambling rights since buying the building in 1996. U S Attorney Eric Melgren said the machines will be removed amid ongoing disputes with Gov. Bill Graves and state tribes. Senator Sam Brownback welcomed the move, while tribal leaders and officials had previously tied the site to broader casino ambitions in the county.

Foster care court supervision to end in Kansas

Nine years of court supervision of Kansas foster care ends June 30 under an agreement between the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services and Children’s Rights Inc. A new unit will monitor services for about 3,300 abused and neglected children in state custody and report annually. The group says progress has been made and foster care is safer, with better adoptions and placements, though some critics remain concerned about privatization and data on outcomes.
