Smoke alarm bill sparks debate in Topeka action
In Topeka lawmakers debate a bill mandating smoke detectors in dwellings with 2062 fires in unprotected homes cited. Rep. Greg Packer says awareness is needed while critics warn of government intrusion and liability. The bill allows citations only during other official duties and sets a $25 fine. Existing structures may use battery or wired detectors, with wiring required for buildings after next January.
