Saturn Plant Drive Hopes To Recast U.S. Auto Industry
General Motors reveals plans to create Saturn as an independent unit with its own manufacturing and distribution network. The green field plant would cost about 3.5 billion dollars, employ 6,000 workers, and aim for a 1988 or 1989 start with a 120 vehicles per hour output. GM and UAW are negotiating a new labor framework while site selection aims for a June announcement.
