Washington reports a Senate House group reached accord on peanut and surplus food provisions of the omnibus farm bill and moved toward an Easter recess. Conferees awaited final agreement on recommendations to the House and Senate with a halt likely until mid next week.
A federal court jury in New Haven convicted six of eight defendants of violating the Smith Act after five days of deliberation. Plaintiffs include Mrs. Emil Asher, 44, of Newark. Joseph Dimon, 35, of New Haven. Jacob Goldring, 40, of Trumbull. Robert Ekins, 47, of Old Saybrook. Sidney Taylor, 40, of New Haven. and James Tate, 47, of Hartford.
The New York Journal-American reports Rocky Marciano has decided to retire. The decision, reached weeks earlier, came from close friends in Boston and was kept secret at manager Al Weill's insistence.
Congress takes an Easter recess after three months with few major laws passed. Major issues loom after April 9 including farm policy social security foreign aid education highway housing and possibly civil rights and tax cuts. The House acted on six appropriation bills while the Senate debated tax and farm measures and faced a veto on gas legislation. Eisenhower has signed the corporate and excise tax extension and is expected to back the farm gasoline bill.

Kansas Regents appoint Dicky Harp as head basketball coach replacing Allen who retires this June. Kerry Waugh promoted to Harp’s assistant to manage freshmen. Jack Eskridge stays as aide and equipment manager. Harp, 62, 185 pounds, a longtime Allen ally, will begin duties after Allen’s retirement with a $7,000 salary. Waugh earns $35,900.
Lawrence city schools superintendent William J. Wolfe said neither he nor Lawrence High School principal Neal Wherry has decided on a basketball coach to replace Jerry Waugh. Waugh was named an assistant at Kansas University for next season with a salary of 5500 dollars. Wolfe and Wherry plan to meet this weekend to move quickly on a hire, while speculation centers on Bill Heitholz as a top candidate.
