A Burlington Northern Santa Fe worker, Salvador Vega of Ottawa, died after an eastbound train struck him near Emporia around 6 30 p m on Thursday. Deputy Garland Hendrickson said Vega, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations continue by the Lyon County Sheriff and BNSF Police. Separately, Lyon County prosecutors filed an involuntary manslaughter charge against 32-year-old Ferman Hernandez in the March 21 shooting death of 50-year-old Alfonso Barajas during a gathering outside an Emporia home. Hernandez is due in court for his first appearance next Tuesday.
Kansas City area man Kellen McKinney received four life terms without parole plus four years for an escape after being convicted of the October 20 2004 stabbing deaths of John and Mildred Caylor at their Bible and Music Store in Raytown. DNA linked him to the crime.
