Composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies on childhood trauma and music
British composer conductor Sir Peter Maxwell Davies recalled growing up under bombing in Manchester during World War II. He described using a wind up gramophone and fox trot records as bombs fell, shaping memory into his orchestral work St Thomas Wake. Now leading major orchestras, he notes early dedication to music, composing across symphonies, concertos and operas while drawing on childhood memories including Agecroft Cemetery haunting his third symphony finale.
