Patty Hearst arraigned on 11 felony charges in LA

Patricia Hearst heiress and convicted bank robber was arraigned in Los Angeles on 11 felony counts of kidnapping robbery and assault. The 22 year old entered a plea and a new date was set while security kept tight around the proceeding. Officers searched Hearst and her parents as she traveled from the Redwood City jail to reach the courtroom. A Rolling Stone copyright story reported a split with the Symbionese Liberation Army. Police arrested two men at the Hearst family retreat prompting a bomb sweep.

Lawrence Douglas officials push 166 million for flood projects

Lawrence seniors win top KU scholarships amid state awards

Four Lawrence High School seniors are among 45 statewide winners of Summerfield and Watkins-Berger Scholarships at Kansas University for the coming academic year. John Clifford, Dennis Haack, Jeff Lindenbaum and 21 women scholars are named as Summerfield or Watkins-Berger recipients. Scholarships cover four years with varying stipends, awarded to Kansas high school undergraduates from National Merit semi finalists. The list includes many other named recipients from across the state.

Economic indicators rise for February but slower than January

The Commerce Department reported the leading indicators index increased 0.8 percent in February marking a fourth straight rise but at a slower pace than January’s 1.5 percent gain. January’s figure was revised down from 2.2 percent as suppliers faced slower deliveries, rising from 42 to 50 percent of firms reporting delays.

Lisagor to receive White award in journalism honor

Peter Lisagor chief of the Washington bureau of the Chicago Daily News has been chosen for the 1976 William Allen White Foundation national award for journalism merit. Del Brinkman foundation director announced the fall ceremony due to Lisagor's travel limits.

Kansas Senate advances 342 million higher education bill

The Kansas Senate tentatively approved a 342 million funding package for next year with 8 percent average faculty raises and 9 percent averages at Fort Hays State. The measure includes KU KU Medical Center and six universities, funded by general revenues and other sources. Senior lawmakers anticipate final action soon and a House return to review amendments.

Damp unsettled weather drapes area through Tuesday

The National Weather Service says clouds and a damp pattern persist through Tuesday with near freezing tonight and a slight chance of showers. Tuesday will be dry but cloudy with highs in the 50s. by Friday the skies should clear and temperatures may reach the 60s.
