First Captive Hippos Born Twins at Local Zoo
The twins are the first pair of hippos born in captivity and arrived about three hours apart. Both seem healthy, as do parents Jeepers and Peepers. Each calf weighs about 40 pounds, far below the typical 100 pounds. Jeepers and Peepers had a previous stillborn youngster last year. Zoo records note only one other multiple hippo birth, described by explorer Samuel Baker who found a mother with two calves in Africa long ago.
