Options for Organic Fertilizers in Home Gardening
A brief guide for gardeners choosing organic fertilizers. It covers why to fertilize, when to fertilize, and how organic sources like manure, compost, plant meals, seaweed, and rock phosphate supply nutrients. It notes that heavy production crops need more nutrients, while ornamental or low-demand plants require less.
Organic garden feeding tips from Jennifer Smith
Garden ing practices emphasize finishing compost and manures before use. Base fertilizer choices on crop needs and soil tests from Extension offices or private labs. Seek products listing nutrient content, favor nitrogen sources like bat guano and fish emulsion, phosphorus from bone meal and rock phosphate, and potassium from alfalfa pellets and kelp. Organic fertilizers improve drainage and soil microbes, aiding plant health. Jennifer Smith, former K-State horticulture agent, hosts The Garden Show.
