Heaven's Gate Moonlight Death Cult Seeks Escape On Hale-Bopp
A San Diego area group calling itself Heaven's Gate believed they were aliens from an evolutionary level above human. They planned to abandon their bodies and board a spacecraft behind Hale-Bopp, driven by apocalyptic mysticism and messianic faith. Members urged self sacrifice as a path to the next world, citing Masada and awaiting the Next Level. Police reported 39 members died in the orchestrated mass death by their own actions, including Ti and Do and other followers.
