Chandler defeats Johnny Carter to retain the WBA bantamweight crown by knockout at 2:28 of the sixth round. The 25 year old improved to 28-0-2 with 15 KOs, while Carter fell to 23-2. Carter earned $50,000 vs Chandler's $150,000 in their first title bout between two Americans since 1947.
Wilfredo Gomez defeated Juan Meza to retain the WBC super bantamweight title for the 14th time, stopping Meza at 2:28 of the sixth round in Atlantic City. Gomez dominated from the second round, landing rights and left hooks, and scored a decisive finish after a brutal attack against the ropes. Larry Holmes appeared on the undercard in tune-up bouts ahead of a June title defense.
