Lawrence Douglas County budget prep amid tax lid limits

Local Lawrence and Douglas County officials begin 2018 budget planning under a state tax lid that limits year to year property tax revenue increases. Officials say they are crafting two budgets one compliant with the law and another showing costs to preserve current services without cuts. The 2015 law was to take effect in 2018 but was moved up a year with some exceptions for public safety funding.

Meal programs brace for federal budget shifts

On a Friday route, volunteer driver Ryan Desch narrated seniors on the Senior Meals list. One recipient is a 103-year-old woman living with her daughter who recalls the Great War, while another is a 92-year-old widow whose husband was wounded in World War II.

Lawrence first responders face big overtime with staff shortages

Lawrence and Douglas County first responders earned over 2 million in overtime pay in 2015, with some workers above 30,000 in overtime. In 2016 overtime costs rose, driven by staffing gaps, as Fire Medical spent 6.8 percent of salaries on overtime in 2015 and 7.6 percent in 2016, totaling 721,557 and 895,341 respectively. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office ran about 6.3 percent, 570,636 in 2015, while the Lawrence Police Department spent about 6 percent, 771,511 in 2015 and 913,894 in 2016.
