Kansas plant to test cellulosic ethanol tech
Six states including Kansas will host plants using a new process that converts crop residue into ethanol, creating cellulose ethanol rather than corn ethanol. The project, backed by up to 385 million dollars in Energy Department grants, aims to prove economic viability and expand fuels beyond corn. Abengoa Bioenergy’s Kansas plant will employ about 120 workers and add 45 million dollars to the state economy, though initial costs are high and lenders remain cautious.
