Retail zoning near rec center slated for vote
City commissioners weigh a retail zoning plan at Sixth Street and the South Lawrence Trafficway. The proposal would permit up to 155,000 square feet of retail space on the northwest corner near the Rock Chalk Park sports village. The 146 acre site is owned by a group led by Duane and Steve Schwada. The Planning Commission shifted from denial to approval in February, after previously opposing the zoning.

Bill cuts taxes for health clubs in Kansas Senate
The Kansas Senate advanced a measure to exempt private health clubs from local property taxes, aiming to level the field with tax exempt YMCA and YWCA facilities. Proponents led by Genesis Health Clubs owner Rodney Steven argued it’s unfair to compete against tax exempt venues, while opponents warn it would reduce local government revenue and benefit special interests. Final vote expected today. Genesis Health Club operates in Lawrence at 2339 Iowa St.
