County Budget Begins With Tax Concerns From Taul
Douglas County starts 2001 budget process with County Commission Chairman Taul aiming to hold taxes down amid rising property values and a higher tax base. Commissioner Nieder warns of pressure to reduce the mill levy while state funding cuts threaten possible $1 million reductions. County Administrator Weinang says agencies may seek state funds, Taul remains conservative, and Monday's 9 a.m. courthouse meeting seeks direction before budget prep. Public comment likely if requested.

Prairie chicken viewing blind near Emporia reserved spots
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks offers blind space through April for prairie chicken viewing near Emporia. Applegate notes that environmental disruption harms reproduction as birds defend leks, with males staying near home ranges while females roam up to five miles.
