Seed bank preserves Southwest native crops and culture
Tohono O'odham gardeners receive free seeds but seek ancestral crops like 60 day corn and brown beans. Archaeologist Barney Burns and Gary Nabhan establish Native Seeds/SEARCH, a regional bank protecting edible crops for over 40 tribes across Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. The program preserves dozens of bean varieties, amaranth, corn, gourds, and sacred plants, keeping traditions, languages, and ceremonies alive while offering education on diet and disease prevention.
