The Lawrence area received four to seven inches of snow over the weekend as a third winter storm hit northeast Kansas. Snow fell mainly Saturday night causing treacherous driving Sunday morning with emergency crews responding to several slide-offs. NWS warned of continued road problems from blowing snow and high winds. City spokeswoman Megan Gilliland said crews had been prepping roads since Thursday and additional units were called in. Monday cancellations listed include Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church food pantry and Ottawa schools not in session.
Douglas County Commissioner Jim Flory testified in favor of House Bill 2249 to allow residents to pursue detachment from a fire district when it crosses county lines. He cited Marion Township, near a Clinton Township Fire Department substation, as an example and warned current law denies representation to non home county residents. Steve Hirsch, secretary of the Kansas State Firefighters Association, opposed the measure, warning of potential abuse and funding instability for districts. The bill remains under consideration. Gov Brownback’s plan to hold third graders back if not reading at grade level remains alive in a modified form.
