The child Elizabeth was with her nurse on the second floor as the men offered $500 each and warned of more money. A police guard was posted at the home and the butler credited with protecting the girl.
San Diego pitcher James B. Fing Chaplin 32 a former New York Giants star died in an automobile accident near National City while returning from Tiajuana. Miss Alma Hamilton 34 drove and survived with minor cuts. Chaplin survived by his widow and two children.
Independent candidates failed to file by last night 10 pm making the April 4 city election largely uncontested. Only the fifth ward council seat between A W Berger and J C Carter faces a contest, with two special bond and traffic light questions on the ballot. Registration totals 6909, up 95 from the March primary, with 87 new voters in the fifth ward.

American Federation of Labor and C SO negotiators will convene in New York on March 30 to respond to President Roosevelt's call to end labor conflicts. After a seven hour session, the parties agreed only to meet again.
Washington dispatches report Germany plans a flank move to seize the Czech legation still held by Minister Vladimir Hurban. They claim Slovakia will announce independence under a 25 year treaty with Germany and press inheritance claims to Czech legations. Hurban may resist, with U S backing seen if Slovakia acts as a protectorate of Hitler.
More than 100 vocational agriculture students from 28 high schools in eastern Kansas competed in the 18th annual grain judging contest at Liberty Memorial high school gym. Ottawa and Waterville sent strong teams while Lawrence teams did not participate.
