Laird Wilcox, 72, curates a vast Kansas University archive of more than 100,000 items on both left and right wing movements. From bumper stickers to books, the collection spans fringe and mainstream beliefs, highlighting free speech as a pillar of democracy. He began collecting in youth, studied at KU in the 1960s, and donated the collection to KU in 1965 while continuing to add items through a dedicated fund.
The Wilcox Collection of Contemporary Political Movements, now 50 years old, is on display at Spencer Research Library with online access. A reception with KU history professor Bill Tuttle is planned, free to attend but RSVP required via Rachel Karwas. The exhibit gathers thousands of items, with curators noting the challenge of selecting pieces and the collection’s breadth from radical right to radical left.
