Reagan's ideological and pragmatic battles at White House
After two months in office Ronald Reagan faces a clash between his conservative ideals and political pragmatism. He insists on reducing government size to empower states, while balancing practical needs like aiding domestic industries and handling foreign policy with limited fighting within the administration. The split shows in debates over Japanese auto quotas, the Soviet grain embargo, and the draft registration, with campaign promises clashing with governing realities.
