Food inspection system challenged over peanut plant scandal
The House committee faulted private inspectors hired by Peanut Corp. of America for failing to detect long standing sanitary problems at its Plainview Texas and Blakely Georgia facilities. The outbreak linked to the firm has sickened about 700 people and caused at least nine deaths. Nestle USA previously cut ties after a 2002 inspection found the Blakely plant filthy with mouse carcasses and a dead pigeon near the peanut receiving door.
