Former smoker seeks transplant amid cross-state move

Williams and his wife will relocate from Lawrence to Oklahoma City in early April because Integris Baptist Medical Center is the only hospital to agree to a double lung transplant. He cites high risk with a 15 percent operative death rate and 60 percent first-year survival, then better long-term outcomes. The family plans fundraisers and travel while Judy Williams notes the experience reshaped their view on life and smoking. They estimate postop meds and care cost about 75,000 dollars, with insurance covering the operation but not all medications. A charity luncheon is planned April 5 at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God Church with tickets and donations through Central National Bank locations and Kaw Valley State Bank.
