Jack Ruby, convicted slayer of Lee Harvey Oswald, fired head attorney Melvin Belli Wednesday night from Dallas jail. In a letter he said he had tried to disengage since January 22 and criticized Belli’s harsh remarks about Dallas.
Jack Ruby appointed Per cy Foreman of Houston as his new head attorney in Dallas. Foreman is among Texas' leading criminal defense lawyers, replacing Melvin Belli per his sister's report.
Oswald was sentenced to death in the electric chair. Belli denounced the verdict as a kangaroo railroad and called Dallas a festering sore. The American Bar Association president condemned the remarks as intemperate. Ruby’s family disputed the defense and noted a $24,000 serial advance helped fund the trial. Belli left for San Francisco after the proceedings.
Lawrence High presents Murder Takes the Veil a three act mystery set at a Louisiana swamp county Catholic girls school. The large set will dominate the stage with Mary Ann Hubbard's play directed by Millard Denny and Dick Doores. Cast includes Liz Neelley Ruth Greene Ann Weir Sara Paretsky Marilyn West Jane Mitchell Johanna Branson Martha Lanning Kylee Smith Stephanie Spyker Gayle Kurata Richard Hoderman Fred Emmons Paul Sharp Judy McConnell Pam Kuntz Jerry Pearson Greg Estes Charles Seetin Robert Welborn Dixie Underwood Mike Rasmussen and others.

Eighteen Douglas County delegates and 18 alternates will attend the Kansas Third District Republican convention this Saturday at Overland Park. State Rep Odd Williams has Douglas County endorsement as a delegate to the national GOP convention July 13 in San Francisco. The Third District will be allowed two delegates and a delegate at large, to the national meet, to be elected Saturday.
Central Junior High School will present a concert at 7 30 this evening in the school auditorium. The orchestra and mixed ensemble, directed by Robert E Zillcox and Mrs Sheila Brown, feature 70 eighth and ninth grade singers in a varied program including 16th century music musical comedy and spirituals. The orchestra of 48 students performs English Country Dance Fiesta Rumba and Sourwood Mountain with Daniel Walter arrangements and percussion highlights. Mary Jane Brown and Winnie Price are accompanists.
Ernest McRae of Wichita announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Kansas attorney general. A WWII Air Force veteran and Kansas University graduate, he practiced law in Wichita and served as an FBI special agent in North Carolina and Washington. His wife Joan Billbe of Iola and four children, including Karen, a KU student, are noted.
James W. Shores aged 33 of 732 Conn. St and Carl Fossand aged 43 of 630 R. I. St were taken to the state penitentiary at Lansing Wednesday to serve definite terms. Shores pled guilty to assault with intent to maim and Fossand to a forgery charge. Sheriff Fred Broeker and Undersheriff Rex Johnson escorted them to prison.
Mrs Opal L Lee aged 51 of 425 Mississippi Street sustained minor injuries this morning in a two car crash at the 5th and Mississippi Street intersection. She did not require medical treatment. Cars driven by Mrs Lee and Jimmy D Thompson aged 17 of 441 Illinois Street collided. Property damage estimated at $600.
Lawrence tobacco dealers report cigarette pipe and small cigar sales rising sharply after a government smoking impact study. One wholesaler cites a near 100 percent increase. Bidrin injections against Dutch elm disease begin on city streets with 60 trees treated in Clinton Park. Harold Barker to speak at Wildlife Week event Monday night. Lawrence High track meet postponed to Saturday due to wet track. Lions to compete in first outdoor meet of season.
Prospective volunteers must be 18 or older. Married couples may apply if no children under 18. Senior citizens encouraged. Officials from Washington will discuss opportunities and interview candidates. Tests run 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Kansas Union. A banquet follows on Wednesday with keynote by Robert Swan, Wescoe to speak, and a post banquet coffee and meeting.
Duckdean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will speak with residence hall presidents as guests of honor. The next Spring Fling is a semi formal dance at 8 30 p m in the Kansas Union ballroom with the George Francis Band providing music. Sundays quiet until Spring Sing starts at 3 30 p m in the Kan ballroom.

Lawrence native Jerry L. Brownlee 32 a Fort Worth city manager arrives in Lawrence for KU Fifth Seminar for City Manager Interns and Trainees. Brownlee a KU and LHS graduate has a master in public administration from KU 1956. He now leads Fort Worth after succeeding L P Cookingham.
Kansas City AP reports a federal grand jury indicted Paul Howard Byers president of Byers Transportation Co and Walker Stanhope assistant business agent of Teamsters Local 41. Byers allegedly paid Stanley B. Clevenger $1000 in January 1961 while Clevenger faced appeal over a conspiracy to embezzle union funds. Stanhope is charged with accepting money from Ideal Truck Lines.
Sheriff officers traveled to Omaha to question William Henry Kauffman 53 an ex convict jailed on a Nebraska murder charge about the October slaying of Patricia Willoughby 20 of Smithville Missouri The Willoughby case ended with her body found on a farm near Smithville about six miles from her abandoned car Police cited a second murder charge against Kauffman for the January slaying of 87 year old Anna Dunning.
An explosion at the Fairfield Chemical Division of Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation in Baltimore triggered an eight alarm fire. One man, Frank Dombrowski, about 37, was killed. Fire officials launched an extensive investigation into the blast. The firm operates a plant northeast of Lawrence in the Bismarck Grove area.
The Legislative Council voted to study possible revision of legislative procedures services and housekeeping. The study will be undertaken by the Rules Procedure and Budget Committee under direction of Lt Gov Harold Chase who proposed it. The council also took on a study of the resources and public libraries of Kansas.
Between 100 and 150 high school students from northeast Kansas and nearby Missouri will attend a Dance Symposium at the University of Kansas campus Saturday. Tau Sigma members, a professional dance society, will conduct the classes.

Washington AP reports James R. Hoffa, convicted Teamsters President, issuing personal appeals to members to prevent a revolt within the 1.7 million strong union. O Callahan, Medal of Honor recipient and WW II chaplain aboard USS Franklin, has died at 58 in St. Vincent Hospital after being lauded as the bravest man by his commanding officer.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk summoned Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin for a 15 minute talk on the return of three U S fliers shot down in East Germany As Dobrynin declined to comment he said he had no further information about the incident and had not received a note from Rusk
In Raleigh a Democratic committee filed the name of T. Lamar Caudle, former head of the Justice Department tax division under Truman, a figure who served time in a tax evasion case, as a candidate for Congress in NC 8th District. In Mexico City actress Lana Turner is ill again, production on Love Has Many Fac es suspended, she has paratyphoid and has returned to Acapulco to recuperate.
Pentagon sources report success in a new method of airlifting lightly armed troops thousands of miles and equipping them with heavy gear from waiting ship depots. The test occurred in late January and February, involving a 4,000-man Army brigade flown from Hawaii to Okinawa with tanks artillery and ammunition unloaded from depot ships despite a tropical storm.
Teamsters Union President James R Hoffa filed notice with the sixth U S Court of Appeals to appeal his conviction on a jury tampering charge. He and three others were convicted in Chattanooga Tennessee on March 4 of attempting to bribe jurors from his 1962 conspiracy trial in Nashville Tennessee.
Patti Garland of 443 Ala. St. earned a summer scholarship to study with the San Francisco Ballet Company after Kansas City auditions. The Lawrence High School sophomore is one of three winners from 68 dancers in the greater Kansas City area. She will study in San Francisco in July and August and later appears in the Kansas City Ballet Company’s April presentations of Aurora’s Wedding and Swan Lake.
Conservatory of Dance student Miss Garland trained with a Ballet Russe alumnus and danced professionally in New York. She studied on two scholarship summers at Stone and Camryn School of Ballet in Chicago. Former student Tomi Wortham Baker moved from Lawrence Dance Studio to West Virginia. Her interest grew from her sister. Jackie Garland is a freshman at Kansas University and performs professionally around Kansas City.
Lawrence High School students compete Friday at Kansas University in seven district divisions of the speech and drama festival with top ratings advancing to the state contest in April. Students include Tom Gilles, Bob Marvin, Woody Wright, Nancy Taylor, David Leonard, Chris Saricks, Betsi Nelick, Shari Morey, Henry Booth, Liz Bates, Connie Stucky, and Wright, Nellick, Gilles, Collins, Layman. Mt. Oread hosts the event with E A McFarland as manager and Melvin C Wyler coaching the team.
In two villages west of Nicosia, renewed clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriots broke out despite U N and British peace efforts. A cease-fire at Ghaziveran collapsed. at Kalokhori, casualties mounted with at least one dead on each side. Turkey issued a fresh warning to the Greek Cypriot government demanding an end to shooting, signaling possible intervention.
