Allied forces press the Cassino assault as German defenses hold in the town corner. New Zealand and Indian troops advance through rubble toward the railway station while engineers bridge the Rapido to speed reinforcements. Thirteen enemy aircraft were shot down and allied air losses cited.
Floods threaten low lands as the Neosho river rises after 1.63 inches of rain. Chanute notes the river at 19% feet with a 18 inch two hour surge, flood stage at 21 feet. Levees rebuilt since 1943 floods. Parsons Neosho at 20 feet rising rapidly. Labette Creek over banks but no major flood expected.
Firefighters responded to a blaze in the oven of a fat range at 930 Kentucky Street yesterday afternoon. The rendering of kitchen fats caused the fire, burning the stove and heavily smoking the kitchen walls.
Allied forces report success on Manus Island with overrun of Lorengau air drome and breach of Japanese defenses near the town. MacArthur notes enemy formations dispersed and 1,100 dead within Allied lines. Looming advance and air raids on Soerabaja Java and Wewak New Guinea are described along with Rabaul attacks, totaling hundreds of tons of bombs and several dozen Japanese aircraft shot down.
Topeka March 18 The Kansas governor informed President Roosevelt that state absentee voting laws already empower soldiers to vote in the coming general election and urged federal transportation help for state ballots. He noted Kansas provides 67 days to vote and the law covers federal state district and county offices. Weather: snow freezing rain and cold with several rivers rising. some roads flooded and crops damaged as rivers edge toward flood stage.
The final All-Musical Vespers of the season will be presented by the University of Kansas school of fine arts tomorrow at 4 PM in Hoch auditorium. A program features leading university groups and faculty artists, fourteen advanced violin students under Professor Gelich performing Adagio Pathatique, plus a string quartet, a faculty vocal quartet, the university a cappella choir, and the University Symphony Orchestra. The concert will be broadcast over KFKU.

Glazis Manchester, 34, Topeka, had first and second degree burns on head face neck hands and back. John M. Dalrymple, 28, Route 1 Olathe, sustained numerous burns. U S Pacific Fleet reports raids on the Caroline Islands beginning mid January with 37 attacks on Truk Ponape and nearby bases. Truk has seen three raids with two carrier air strikes Feb 16 17. Kusaie has 16 hits Ponape 13 Oruluk 3 and Vingelap 2.
Anheuser 32 son of W Fred Anheuser vice president of Anheuser Busch Inc was indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge of obtaining a draft deferment through allegedly false affidavits. The indictment states he held an 8 C agricultural classification claiming full time farming since 1938. He owns a 520 acre Hawk Point Missouri farm, is married and has two children.
Gov. Andrew Schoeppel proclaimed March 31 as Arbor Day urging Kansans to plant trees and shrubs in quantity. He said trees take years to mature and replacement is urgent amid global war to continue enjoying nature’s bounty.
American heavy bombers supported by long range escorts struck targets in southern Germany while earlier raids hit Vienna. Between 750 and 1,000 Flying Fortresses and Liberators participated, aiming at aircraft plants airfields and war industries. German and Allied reports note heavy air battles over France and Germany with Swiss Basle alert and coast watchers observing long cross channel flights.

U S Army Air Force reports Jackie Coogan former film star now an American glider pilot was the first to land when British forces were delivered by air behind Japanese lines in northern Burma over a week ago. He led the gliders to signal other approaching craft and directed landing operations until a superior officer arrived. The Liberty Memorial high school band directed by Oliver Hobbs will provide music for the annual spring opening on Friday evening March 24. Ensign Alvin L. Howe arrived from the naval air station at Quonset Point Rhode Island to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Howe. His wife and four year old daughter are visiting from Denver. Howe has been in service since January and was formerly on the Denver Post editorial staff. He authored a recent book Air World for Denver University Press based on Post articles. He has three sisters Jane Dorothy and Helen with ties to Honolulu Kansas City and Sunnyside.
The Kansas State College board of regents extended teaching privileges by a year for M. F. Ahearn director of athletics and L. E. Conrad head of the engineering department who would have faced retirement age limits. The board also approved leasing 160 acres in Rawlins county for oil development.
University of Kansas students have raised $674.69 toward the $1,000 goal for the Red Cross drive. Miss Marie Miller, coordinator, said some houses have not reported and individual solicitations continue. If contacted late, the drive may extend into next week to reach the target while faculty and service members bring total university contributions above $4,000.
Postmaster General Walker states that women now fill many roles in the postal service. He cites over 17,500 women as postmasters and thousands more as clerks substitutes rural carriers and assistant postmasters, underscoring strong service and broader opportunities for women.
Kansas traffic deaths totaled 16 in February per the safety division of the state highway patrol. The February toll brings 1944 year to date deaths to 39, compared with 12 in the same month four years earlier.
