Rath Guilty Of Forgery And Larceny In Bank Case
Pittsburg March 17. The commonwealth case against Samuel Rath cashier of Washington Savings Bank Washington Pennsylvania went to the jury at 10 30 this morning and by 2 00 this afternoon the verdict was guilty. Charges were forgery and larceny. The bank suspended April 7 1882 due to Rath defalcation and it was found his accounts were over 100000 in arrears. He confessed taking the money citing grain speculations. He had for two years prior to discovery speculating with bank funds and pocketed deposits while giving certificates with no entries. An assessment was ordered but a stockholder refused to pay and faced embezzlement forgery and selling returns to the U S internal revenue department.
