Insurgent air attacks on Barcelona caused heavy casualties in a nine day raid sequence. Officials fear total deaths may reach over 500, with 400 bodies in morgues and 50–60 more believed buried in ruins. Hospitals overwhelmed as fires and shattered windows disrupted care.
Berlin reports Hitler may announce on Spain and its long civil war in a forthcoming declaration to the Reichstag. Officials said no major developments were expected in Lithuania Poland at Germany's back door, with focus on Spain rather than northern Europe.
Eight Japanese naval planes attacked Nanchang airfields in the South China province striking the old airfield and a newer one. Reports say six Chinese planes were destroyed and the Japanese swept the area with bombs. Japanese forces along the Tientsin Pukow railway claimed control of Tenghsien in Shantung with 40,000 Chinese defenders retreating 16 miles south.
A crowd of about half a million gathered near Moscow’s railway station to greet Commander Ivan Papanin and his three colleagues returning from the North Pole voyage aboard their icebreaker. The celebration marked their successful expedition on the ice floe and through northern waters.

Secretary Hull to the nation calls for arming for protection against international lawlessness. He urges no alliances but collaboration with peaceful nations and strong armed forces to deter aggression while avoiding world policing. He warns seclusion would lead to chaos and economic distress.
Lithuania and Poland cooled tension after Defense Minister Col. Stasys Dirmantas said legal settlement was being prepared. The release of a Lithuanian policeman held by Poles helped ease friction, which stemmed from Wilno dispute and a March 11 Polish border guard death.
Tomorrow evening townspeople will enjoy the sixteenth annual spring window unveiling and show in Lawrence. Merchants display spring merchandise in glittering windows while bands perform in a parade leading to the event. Ottawa Kansas March 17 Charles Wells state highway commissioner told the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce a plan to end the dual routing of highway 50 in Kansas may come soon. The northern route passes through Council Grove Herington Marion Lyons Great Bend Larned Jetmore Garden City while the southern route goes via Ottawa Emporia Newton Hutchinson and Dodge City. He hopes to designate the southern path as highway 50.
French destroyers La Palme and Epervier carried 500 Spanish political refugees to Port Vendres for confinement. The evacuees, bearded men of fighting age, were housed at a concentration camp before removal to insurgent Spain. They had resided on French government property in Barcelona since the war began due to Franco sympathies.
High school musicians from five states attend the fourth annual mid western music competition at the University of Kansas May 5 to 7. More than 3 500 students expected from Kansas Illinois Oklahoma Missouri Nebraska. A 700 piece massed band and a 250 piece orchestra are featured along with regular contests. Judges include A A Harding Claude B Smith Homer F Phillips Harold Bachman Ludwig Hebestreit Howard Hanson and Herbert Rifkind. Dr Hanson will speak at the fine arts banquet.
Rain will reach western Kansas tomorrow as a low pressure area moves from Wyoming. Flor a says the state will see fair skies tonight and warmth in the east. Friday brings clouds showers and cooler air in the west and central portions with temperatures near 65 to 70 statewide.

In the National AAU tournament in Denver the Harmons Demons of Chicago defeated the Kansas City Healers 74 to 44. Three former Big Six players led the Healers scoring. Frank Groves of Kansas State led with 22 points, Fred Pralle of Kansas University added 12, and Ray Noble, another KU alum, scored nine.
Senator McGill of Kansas said he would seek early action on a bill to establish a federal district court in Hutchinson Kansas. The proposal aims to create a new caseload venue in central Kansas and move federal judicial business closer to local residents.

Two navy airmen were killed when their scouting bomber crashed and burned on Camp Kearny mesa in San Diego California on March 17. The victims were aviation cadet Herbert W. Youngman and aviation machinist's mate first class Junius T. Murry.
