Dispatches from Manila suggest hostilities could conclude within hours. Washington officials, pleased with the situation, refrain from details as Advices reached President McKinley, indicating a possible rapid end to the fighting.
Manila reports Company 16 of the Washington regiment captured 150 more prisoners near Taguig. Rebels’ arms mostly hidden or thrown into the river. Engineers built a temporary bridge across the Panty River to support artillery and supply movements.
The War Department ordered light batteries to General Oils for the Philippines to replace heavier artillery. A dozen bombshells are to be used as mountain batteries where movement of heavy guns is impractical. This deployment aims to bolster Manila defenses as the conflict continues.

News from Francisco and Honolulu reports Princess Kalulua born October 16 1875 died on the 6th from inflammatory rheumatism. She was heir apparent in 1891 to Liliuokalani. Funeral Sunday March 12 at Old Native church directed by the government. City and foreign consuls’ flags lowered. Bishop Willis to conduct services.
Washington reports the War Department ordered the transport Roumania to sail from Santiago with its cargo of soldier dead. It is to reach New York the following Monday, after collecting bodies from Porto Rico and Santiago. Officials note no list of bodies is available yet.
New York reports a vast copper combination forming with Rockefellers as key players. The plan links principal mining properties and the ligsivelting trust into a copper trust. Capitalization ranges discussed include 200 million and up to 1 billion dollars.
War department contemplates immediate muster of 35000 volunteer army as volunteers in the Philippines resist six month service extension after peace treaty ratification. If Queen signs treaty soon and ratifications are exchanged, volunteers may be mustered out and hasten home.
Minneapolis March 17 Senator Kyle of South Dakota says on the way home that President McKinley has privately received advice suggesting the Filipino republic cannot last much longer. He cites sources close to the president. Singapore March 17 reports the transport Sheran is on the way.
Weather notes from Kansas City station describe a developing southwestern storm with showers and thunderstorms likely in western and central regions, light rain elsewhere, rising temperatures in the south, and lower barometric readings. Separate dispatch reports a Eureka Kansas judge, I L Davis, dying of heart failure after three decades in law and politics. St Louis Browns bought by Edward C Becker from creditors in sheriff sale, price undisclosed.
Washington notes telegraphic exchanges between Gen Brooke and the War Department outline that the United States will act within Congress resolutions in Cuba. No single government or group will be recognized and the Cuban assembly will be treated as any other body. If riots occur it will be dispersed. harmless gatherings may be allowed but must not obstruct authority.
The board arrived in Omaha and began examining packing plants in South Omaha. Witnesses included a Philadelphia physician who described a controversial injection claim at the Swift plant and military personnel from the Sixteenth Infantry. The panel then moved on to Kansas City for the night.
March 17 a bound passenger train on the Rock Island road jumped the track near here. The tank and baggage cars overturned as the train burned. Twenty six passengers were injured though not seriously. List of killed and injured includes W Freeman and many others from Kansas City and nearby towns. A relief train and army inquiry followed.
Beaver Colo March 17 General Counsel Dolphin calls the grand chiefs of federated railway orders to decide if a strike shall be ordered or a Colorado & Southern system telegraphy offices dispute. Dudeway’s refusal to treat with the telegraphers order triggers the escalation.
A report to the Lexuw committee cites figures showing Clerk Waxerman of the Court of Criminal Correction issued about 83,270 naturalization papers from 1805 to 1808. Waageboien asserts there is a substantial amount owed him by rural political committees for naturalization work.
Five prominent citizens were killed in a Bloody Street riot in Hot Springs Arkansas yesterday. Governor Jones arrived from Little Rock and Judge Belding named 260 special policemen. Peace and quiet prevailed today with no further trouble anticipated.
