If Lawrence passes a half cent sales tax on April 6 the city must settle how the revenue table will be drawn. State revenue officials say no tables exist until a city approves the tax and hearings will set brackets and exemptions. All funds would return to Lawrence with no administration skim.
Lt Gov Reynolds Shultz backs key Carnegie Commission findings on campus dissent and police relations while criticizing protection of campuses as sanctuaries. He urges firm university action and closure only as last resort, and supports robust university community consultation with Rick Walker calling the document broadly constructive.
A. B. Commons of 1706 Learnard Ave taps sugar maples this March to boil sap into syrup. He recalls childhood sugaring in Illinois and uses two spiles and two buckets to extract sap. He has produced about three pints so far and notes the aroma as sap boils on the stove.

An unknown killer calling himself Zodiac claims 17 victims since 1966 in a letter to the Los Angeles Times. The note, mailed from Pleasanton, says he took responsibility for a Riverside City College coed slaying, and ties to five Bay Area murders since 1968 are suspected by San Francisco police.
Lawrence youths show strong interest in a city wide maxi cleanup scheduled for March 29 to April 4. William J. Womack notes the effort as gung ho with all city schools involved for beautification and educational teamwork.
