Kansas tax plan aims to trim income tax and curb sales tax burden
The Senate backed measures to slow income tax cuts while preserving core programs like education and public safety. The House plans a debate next week on a tax bill that would lower sales tax gradually, divert funds from highways, and limit income tax reductions to when revenues grow. Republicans and Democrats clash over shifting funding from income taxes to sales taxes, warnings of effects on low and middle class families, and prospects for Brownback’s broader proposals. The budget approved alongside the tax plan totals over 14 billion for the next fiscal year, with revisions to higher education.
