Kansas daily newspapers reach historic circulation with 53 dailies totaling 706 988 paid subscriptions. Journal-World reports 9 762 paid subscribers, a 30 percent rise in six years, and Law rence area subscriptions exceeding local dwellings. Outside city, Journal-World daily circulation is 3 374.
University officials plan permanent employee housing west of Allen Fieldhouse to attract and retain faculty. About 93 units are planned at first, with six units per building, each apartment including living dining area kitchen bath and two bedrooms. Rent runs about 50 dollars a month with utilities. Temporary housing will allow a trial period before deciding on long term stays. Sunnyside occupancy averages 18 months with some families staying three to four years and over 950 families have lived there. 181 Sunnyside residents have moved to Lawrence homes. More units may be added later. construction could begin in about a year.
A light plane missing since Sunday was found this morning about three miles southeast of Garden City Kansas. The body of Harold Resh aged 40 from Red Oak Town was found in the wreckage. He had been working on a nearby farm.
A neighborhood artist, Antonio Picasso, discovered talent last year while crafting a 2 for 25¢ sign for wilted eggplants. He now decorates the shop walls with murals including Romeo and Juliet balcony and Columbus landing, even throwing ripe tomatoes at the ceiling scenes to depict Indians. The art is admired yet the store remains messy for shoppers.
The plan for U.S. 40-59 north from Lawrence adds a 160 foot bridge replacing a small culvert, expanding floodway from 140 to 2,300 square feet as part of the toll road’s Lawrence interchange. Additional spans near U.S. 40-59, Heck's Lake, and Kaw River Bridge boost flood capacity, accepting district recommendations. Directors Albert Brune, Emil Heck, and William Cain lead the drainage district and praise the decision.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon urged 2,600 California Republicans in Los Angeles to build a stronger GOP majority by 1956. He said the party won in 1952 mainly due to a strong candidate and that the party is not yet capable of electing a president. Nixon relayed Eisenhower's view that the president should lead and build party strength to match his own.
Memorial Hospital reports a sequence of birth notices across multiple towns naming mothers and babies. Entries include Mrs Hattie Giles Sunflower and others with addresses such as 1109 Vermont Street and 912 West 8th Street, plus couples credited with newborn sons and daughters, and several residents listed with full names and paren tag baby details.
Five persons were found guilty in police court of traffic violations. Jerry Hughey of Route 1 failed to yield right of way and paid a 15 dollar fine plus five days with two sessions suspended. Arthur Folsom Jr. forfeited a 10 dollar bond for running a stop sign. Reno Neuner speeding paid 30 dollars with 15 suspended for two sessions in traffic school. Ronald Thomas forfeited 310 bond for running a stop sign. James Garrison failed to yield right of way and paid for one session in traffic school.
Fire at the Johnson Hotel in Laramie killed six men after flames swept the two story building. Fire Chief Blake Fanning said the rear lobby area near the stairs was the blaze center. victims died of smoke or heat. Five identified include Harold C. Dahl Colp Ed Bots-Smith Eric Irene Henrich Burglund and Walter Finnell with one unidentified. Alfred Warner survived by climbing onto a hotel sign. Five others hospitalized with burns or smoke effects. The 2:55 am blaze forced guests to escape via windows.
Mrs. Florence Decker 78 died Monday night at County Convalescent Hospital. Survived by daughter Mrs. Lewis Knight and two sons. Funeral Friday 10 am at Rumsey Funeral Home with Rudolph C. Fred D. Plummer 80 a former DeSoto resident died Sunday at his son Arthur H Plummer’s Fontana home He was born in Johnson County and lived there until seven years ago A retired farmer he is survived by his brother Len Plummer of DeSoto a half brother Tracy Plummer of Olathe and his son Burial will be in De Soto cemetery with services Thursday at the DeSoto Methodist Church
In Los Angeles a tense moment interrupted Vice President Richard M. Nixon’s hospital ceremony when an amateur photographer Bernice Bardsley’s flash bulb exploded with pistol-like noise. Glass spattered Nixon’s suit. he reassured the crowd and continued to dedicate the hospital’s new wing.

Coach Allan Woolard leads a team with 127 game scoring streaks and top Kansas state ranking, while also planning local parking arcade legislation and reporting pipeline projects near Lawrence.
A fire broke out today on Pier 2 at Fort Mason as 500 soldiers awaited embarkation. The blaze swept the outer pier while relatives were evacuated to safety. Firefighters controlled the blaze in about 25 minutes.
In El Dorado Kansas first and second grade students with parental consent will receive the Salk polio vaccine late next month. The drive targets children in these grades at local schools under the vaccination program.

Kansas University Press announced a new book Gericault and His Work by Klaus Berger chair of the art history department at the University of Kansas. Winslow Ames translated from German. a French translation appeared earlier. The volume includes 103 black and white illustrations and four color plates. It surveys Gericault life and links his work to 19th century French art, assessing his achievement.
Harriet Comfort mezzo-soprano gives a graduate recital in Strong Auditorium at p.m. Wednesday. A student of Reinhold Schmidt at K U, she hails from Pittsburg. Program includes Poulenc Poemes de Ronsard, Wolf Mignon, Purcell Songs from Orpheus Britannicus. Accompanist is Jean Gurley of Hamilton Missouri.
Cherryvale Kansas reports a blanket $100 wage increase is included in contracts for Cherryvale school teachers as announced by Superintendent H. E. Gill. This raise affects salary schedules across the district and illustrates local education funding decisions.
Three Kansas University students from Phi Delta Theta were hurt when their car left Lake View Road and plunged into a deep ditch around 11 p m Monday. Robert Crist of Scott City and James Lynder of Winfield, both freshmen and sophomores, sustained minor cuts and bruises and were treated at Watkins Memorial Hospital. Harry Jordan of El Dorado, also in the car, received treatment in the emergency room. A limb from the same group was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for a scalp laceration and released.
By noon today Lawrence firemen had not had any alarms since two fires Sunday evening. At James W. Henderson’s home a loosened stove valve allowed flames to flare up but caused no damage. At Jay Drake Sr.’s home a rug hung over a stove caught fire. damage was slight.
Mrs. Goldie Sloan thanks Dr Walters Dr Zimmer and all the nurses for kindness during her hospital stay. She also thanks friends relatives who sent cards flowers and visited at hospital and home. E G Day expresses similar gratitude for cards and thoughtfulness.
