Fryer causes Perkins blaze in Lawrence restaurant

Fire investigators say the Perkins Restaurant and Bakery fire started at the fryer. The suppression system did not activate, though a sprinkler head did, helping limit damage. No injuries were reported, and the restaurant remained closed for repairs with no damage estimate available.

Kansas educators oppose arming teachers in safety bill

Kansas lawmakers consider a bill to provide 5 million dollars to the State Department of Education for grants to school districts to fund building safety upgrades. Critics Janet Waugh and Kathy Busch oppose arming teachers, citing trauma and workload, while Education Commissioner Randy Watson aims to revive the Center for Safe and Prepared Schools to inspect buildings and coordinate with law enforcement. The center previously ended in 2014 when federal funds expired.

Kansas considers higher alcohol limit for microbreweries

The bill would raise the strongest beer limit and keep candy sales to minors in check. Philip Bradley of the Craft Brewers Guild of Kansas noted two or three microbreweries showing interest, while Free State Brewing Co declined comment. He cited existing market beers up to 22 and 28 percent and called 15 percent not high. If approved today, the bill returns to the House to concur with Denning's amendment or go to conference.
