Kansas City AP reports 17yearold Jess Lea Jr died after wagering he could drink a fifth of whisky in under five minutes. Two older youths, Harold Barber and James Yates, signed statements. police hold them for investigation. They said Lea consumed about three quarters of the bottle before dying in a drug store parking lot, then in Raytown.

Topeka Writer Hurt As Car Hits Pole
Zula Bennington Greene known as the Peggy of the Flint Hills, 64, of Topeka, suffered cuts bruises and a lost tooth when her car struck a Kansas Power and Light Co pole near 9th and Florida Streets Thursday night. She was not hospitalized. Police said she did not know how the crash happened and did not see the pole until impact. Damages were about 600 dollars to the car and 200 dollars to the pole.
