Gordon Parks Leaves Kansas Legacy Through Learning Tree
The photographer and film maker Gordon Parks, born one of 15 siblings in Kansas, wrestled with racism in his youth and later forged ties to Fort Scott and Lawrence. He credited his mother with guiding him to learn from every place, turning Kansas into a lasting “learning tree” through his life and work. His life spanned Life magazine photography, film direction with The Learning Tree and Shaft, and music composition, with KU and Fort Scott honoring him and his legacy through exhibits, signs, and a lasting burial pledge in his Kansas homeland.
