Topeka Kan March 12 The Kansas senate passed 37 to 0 and sent to the house a watered down civil defense measure. It removes most sweeping powers from the governor and bases civil defense on a voluntary framework. The plan eliminates two five mill tax counties and allows local authorities to levy for defense costs. Sedgwick county designated a critical target area may levy half a mill to fund its own council.

House votes tentative approval on social security bill
Topeka March 12 The Kansas House gave tentative approval to a bill bringing thousands of state and county officials under the federal Social Security program and allowing cities to join. If passed tomorrow it would go to the Senate. The plan retroactive to Jan 1 1951 would permit retirement at 65 starting July 1 1952 with a 1.5 percent employee contribution up to 3600 annual pay and matching state and county contributions. House member Rep Oliver Rinehart cited an annual state financing of about 350000. The House also sent to the governor a 100000 legislative expense measure and a 3500 biennial expense item for the Board of Regents. The Senate planned to vote on 17 measures including a watered-down civil defense bill in a single afternoon session.

Tomlinson to staff KU spring football staff
Dick Tomlinson a former Kansas star and NFL lineman will join J V Ikes staff for spring practice starting next week at Kansas University Athletic Director Dutch Lonborg announced. Tomlinson, enrolled in graduate work, will assist the line and hopes to return to pro football with the Pittsburgh Steelers next season. He starred for KU from 1947 to 1950 earning All-Big Seven honors and later played in the NFL. He is a Dodge City native, married with one child.

Weavers Set Fishing Record With Day's Catch of 9 Sails
Weavers Art and Nell Weaver set a new fishing record at Acapulco on the lower west coast of Mexico by catching nine sailfish in six hours aboard the Papagaya. Only one sailfish was brought to shore, others released to thrill future fishermen. the catch weighed 90 to 190 pounds and totaled nearly a hundred feet in length. Prison term for bank fraud tied to FDIC collapse case
