Sheriff warns of effects from cuts to mental health system
Douglas County Sheriff Ken McGovern urged support for funding the state mental health system as advocates press legislators to spare it from further cuts. Bert Nash CMHC CEO David Johnson warned cuts shift costs elsewhere, likening the impact to a balloon. Johnson noted $59 million in cuts since 2008, including $20 million for reform grants and almost $10 million from Medicaid rate reductions in 2010.

Kansas State Scholastic Chess Championship shows young talent
About 600 students gathered at the Kansas Union for the Kansas State Scholastic Chess Championship. Ten year old Lucas Dryer from Olathe, in KU gear, won his first game in twenty minutes after pinning his opponent's queen to a rook and then taking the queen. Lucas has played chess since age four, learning from his Bulgarian grandfather and competing with him. His parents Jeff and Helena study the game and admire his progress.
